Life in Lubbock
Lubbock is a city located in the heart of the West Texas panhandle region. Situated on what is called the "high plains" of Texas, it is about 5 hours west of Dallas/Ft. Worth, 3 hours northwest of Abilene, and 6 hours east of Albuquerque by car. This city of over 200,000 people has most of what you would expect from a major city: sporting arenas, movie theaters, a large mall, etc. To some, Lubbock is known for its flat terrain and the fertile farmland which surrounds it. To others, it is known as the home of Texas Tech University, one of the largest universities in the nation, as well as Lubbock Christian University.
But to still others, Lubbock is known as the home of Sunset International Bible Institute (SIBI) and Adventures In Missions. It is here that the AIM students live, study, work and play for the first 8 months of their AIM experience. AIM class sessions and other activities take place in the facilities of SIBI. Housed by the Sunset Church of Christ, whose elders oversee the work of the school, SIBI has a fantastic facility of classrooms, offices, larger meeting halls, a library, a video studio, a printing operation, and is benefited by a member-owned bookstore where students receive a discount.
AIM does not have its own housing, but rather its students live in a normal apartment complex about three miles from the school. With this housing arrangement, AIM students can maintain their community with each other while also dwelling not on a campus but in a more "real world" environment. AIM students are normally housed 3 to an apartment. Each apartment has two bedrooms and two full bathrooms, along with a kitchen, a dining area, and a living room. The drive between the apartments and the school campus takes 5 to 10 minutes, and there is a convenient bus route that connects the two. Within walking distance of the apartments are a grocery store, a laundromat, a large park, a post office, and a college campus, among other things.
